The Savannah Boat Parade of Lights: A Community Tradition on the River

Experience the Savannah Boat Parade of Lights, a volunteer-led event supporting Greenbriar Children’s Center with festive boats and holiday cheer.

The Savannah Boat Parade of Lights is a beloved holiday tradition that lights up the river with festive boats. This year marks the 23rd annual parade, and it’s all in support of Greenbriar Children’s Center, a local organization dedicated to helping children and families in need.

The parade begins at the Dock at Eastern Wharf, right in front of the Thompson Hotel, and takes boats along the river, passing by spots like the Convention Center and Plant Riverside District. The boats, decorated with lights and creative holiday designs, create a magical sight for everyone viewing along the riverfront. Each vessel brings its own unique flair to the event, making the parade a one-of-a-kind holiday experience.

“Many of the captains return year after year, enjoying the rewarding experience of supporting a local cause while celebrating the holiday season,” says Delylah Thompson, the parade chair. Some captains plan their boat designs well in advance, purchasing lights and decorations immediately after Christmas each year to take advantage of post-holiday sales, while others create their boats on a whim. Regardless of the approach, each boat has its own charm and personality, adding to the whimsical, holiday spirit of the event.

The Georgia Queen Riverboat leads the parade, which makes two loops down the river, giving everyone along the route a chance to see the illuminated boats up close. After the parade, head to the Thompson Hotel for continued festivities, music, and holiday fun.

The parade is made possible entirely by the hard work of volunteers, from the boat captains to the organizers. This community-driven effort brings together locals who are passionate about giving back. All proceeds from the event benefit Greenbriar Children’s Center, which provides critical services like emergency shelter and early childhood care for families in Savannah. The support from volunteers and participants ensures these essential programs continue to make a difference in the community.

This is a great way to celebrate the season with friends, family, and neighbors while supporting a fantastic local cause. The Savannah Boat Parade of Lights is a festive and heartwarming event, bringing the community together to kick off the holiday season.

The parade is on November 30th at 7pm.
